Bay Area organic food company recalls seeds over salmonella risk

Navitas Organics, a food company based in Marin, has issued a recall for some 8-ounce bags of its chia seeds because of potential salmonella contamination, according to a notice filed with the Food and Drug Administration.

“This recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure following a recall initiated by the company’s chia seed supplier,” the notice said.

The company issued the notice on Jan. 23 and said no illnesses had been reported. The bacteria can cause acute gastrointestinal illnesses and blood infections that can sometimes be fatal.

The chia seeds are sold by retailers such as Whole Foods and Amazon. The recall applies to pouches with UPC 858847000284 or the lot numbers W31025283, W31025286, W31025287, W31025311, W31025314, W31025315, W31025316 or W31025317.
