WATSONVILLE — Watsonville police arrested a pair of juveniles following an operation Tuesday in connection with an attempted murder in January.
On Jan. 19, officers responded to reports of shots fired on the 1500 block of Freedom Boulevard, according to Watsonville Police Department social media posts from that time. While officers found evidence of a shooting at the scene, they did not locate any victims or suspects. Later that evening, officers were advised that a 17-year-old had arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Michelle Pulido, a spokesperson for the Watsonville Police Department, confirmed Wednesday that the victim has since been released from the hospital and recovered.
On Tuesday, Watsonville police detectives served several search warrants in connection to the shooting, primarily on the 100 block of Ginos Court and the 100 block of Arthur Road. Freedom Elementary School, located on Holly Drive near Ginos Court, was briefly placed on a precautionary lockdown, which was lifted shortly before noon. Warrants were also served in Prunedale and Marina, and the department received additional assistance from local law enforcement partners.
Through this operation, two 17-year-olds were taken into custody. Because they are juveniles, their identities are not being released. A gun was also recovered during the operation.
One of the suspects was arrested on attempted homicide charges due to shooting into a car the evening of Jan. 19, while the other was arrested on firearm-related charges. Both have been booked into the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall.
