A man facing federal charges in connection with approximately 250 mail thefts

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — “In my time as sheriff here, since 2019, we haven’t had as many people affected through a mail theft of this nature,” said Sheriff Jesse Jahner, Cass County Sheriff.

Approximately 250 people across Cass and Ransom Counties have reported mail theft. And through the ongoing investigation, law enforcement has identified and arrested 50-year old Michael J. Hunter.

“Our office, our team here, along with the United States Postal Inspection Service, worked diligently over several months to identify a suspect, which we now have done. And that person is now involved in the court process so that the victims can receive justice,” said Jahner.

Through the investigation with the USPIS and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, it was determined the thefts began as early as April of 2025. Many of the items included birthday cards, wedding gifts, graduation gifts, and other items. Hunter was arrested on January 29th and is being held at the Cass County Jail.

“It’s just good for our victims to know number one that we were able to identify the suspect and that they’re being held accountable for their actions. But then I also think it’s also important for the rest of the individuals living in that particular area where these thefts occurred, maybe they weren’t a victim, to know that we’ve located this person and now there’s not a possibility for them to become a victim,” said Jahner.

As of now, Hunter is facing federal charges, which include theft of mail matter up to three counts.

“That investigation is nearing the end, but it’s not fully closed out yet, but at this point, we feel like we have the person responsible for it,” said Jahner.

Investigation into the mail thefts is still ongoing by the USPIS.
