On April 23, 2025, the Supreme Court of Liberia issued a major ruling that should have brought clarity to a tense political standoff—but instead, it has deepened public concern. The ruling, sparked by a bill of information filed by House Speaker Hon. Fornati Koffa, declared that Hon. Richard Koon and the majority bloc were illegally presiding over the House of Representatives. The court made it clear: Richard Koon’s speakership is unlawful.

In response, President Joseph Boakai addressed the nation. But rather than bringing unity and understanding, his speech has drawn sharp criticism. Many Liberians feel that the President failed to properly explain the Supreme Court’s decision or its real-world implications for the people. His vague and dismissive remarks have left citizens confused and disappointed.

More seriously, the President’s response showed a clear disregard for the rule of law. By undermining the Court’s ruling, President Boakai has sent a dangerous signal—that the executive branch can ignore the judiciary when it chooses. This kind of lawlessness is deeply troubling, and it adds to growing doubts about whether this administration can effectively govern.

We must remember: Liberia’s hard-won peace and fragile democracy depend on respecting legal institutions. When a sitting President openly sidesteps the authority of the Supreme Court, it not only threatens national stability—it also damages our image across West Africa and the entire continent.

Now more than ever, Liberia needs strong, transparent leadership. Our leaders must speak clearly, act lawfully, and prioritize the well-being of the people over political maneuvering. President Boakai’s failure to do so is a wake-up call—not just to the government, but to every citizen who values peace and justice.

The people of Liberia are watching. The world is watching. And history will remember who stood up for the rule of law, and who turned their back on it.
