Liberia: The Nature Compact Donates Medical Supplies to JFK Medical Center Oncology Department to Support Cancer Care

Sinkor, Monrovia – The Nature Compact, a leading natural resource management organization in Liberia, has made a significant donation of medical supplies to the Oncology Department of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Sinkor as part of its annual charity and social responsibility initiative.

The donation was presented at the JFK Medical Center by a delegation from The Nature Compact led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Borwen L. Sayon. The supplies included cartons of intravenous fluids, IV tubing, emergency medications, and other essential consumables necessary for oncology care.

Speaking during the handover, Mr. Sayon said the donation reflects The Nature Compact’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and critical national institutions. He emphasized that the organization recognizes the challenges faced by cancer patients in Liberia, particularly given the limited resources available within the country’s healthcare system.

“This donation is part of our annual charity initiative, driven by our understanding of the pressing needs within Liberia’s health sector, especially cancer care,” Mr. Sayon stated. “We commend the current administration of the JFK Medical Center for the progress being made to improve healthcare delivery, particularly within the Oncology Department.”

Receiving the donation on behalf of the JFK Medical Center administration, Dr. J. Emmanuel Tamba, Chief Medical Officer, expressed gratitude to The Nature Compact for the timely and thoughtful intervention. He described cancer as one of the most challenging health issues confronting Liberia and acknowledged the constraints under which the Oncology Department continues to operate.

“The Oncology Department is still a relatively new unit, and while it faces many challenges, it has made notable strides in improving services for cancer patients,” Dr. Tamba said. “We are grateful to The Nature Compact for recognizing this need and providing tangible support.”

Dr. Tamba assured that the donated materials would be used strictly for their intended purpose to enhance patient care and improve overall wellbeing at the hospital. He encouraged other institutions and organizations to emulate The Nature Compact’s example and contribute to strengthening healthcare delivery nationwide.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Deddeh Supuwood, Head of the Oncology Department, commended The Nature Compact for extending support beyond its traditional sector. She highlighted the significance of cross-sector collaboration in national development.

“It is not common to see a natural resource management organization deliberately support the health sector,” Dr. Supuwood said. “This gesture demonstrates leadership, compassion, and a holistic understanding of development.”

Established in 2019, The Nature Compact provides technical assistance through strategic partnerships with the Government of Liberia, local communities, and the private sector. Its core areas of work include natural resource management and policy advisory services, sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, agroforestry and

climate-smart agriculture, environmental education and impact assessment, climate change, and payment for ecosystem services, including research, monitoring, and evaluation of natural assets.
