Moorhead City Council members share their frustrations over ICE in the state

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — Several Moorhead city council members expressed their frustrations and dismay over ICE agents in the state at Monday’s meeting.

City Council member Emily Moore read a letter by a friend of Alex Pretti, a man who was fatally shot over the weekend in Minneapolis.

The letter emphasized Pretti’s presence and asked people to continue carrying his legacy.

While the city does not have any rulings over ICE agents, Mayor Shelly Carlson said the city has been looking into it.

While city council members Nicole Mattson and Lisa Borgen both shared their disappointment with how the Department of Homeland Security has conducted themselves within the state.

“Speak out, love your neighbor. As Alex Pretti said, caring for others is hard work. I believe that now more than ever, hard work is worth doing. I ask you to join me in doing it,” said Mattson.

Mattson and Emily Moore called for the City Council to address their thoughts about ICE and recent developments during the meeting. All city council members agreed to discuss the matter.

“You don’t get to do whatever you want just because you put on a badge and they give you a gun. You still have to follow the law and the U.S. Constitution. So for anyone to think that they can do whatever they want and there’s no repercussions. I don’t believe that for a moment,” said Borgen.

Borgen said she does not believe in the enforcement ICE agents are following with little training compared to local law enforcement. When asked about a post made on social media, she reiterated this, calling them ‘thugs’.
