Overturned tanker temporarily closes southbound Highway 101 lanes in San Jose

The impacts from a winter storm hitting the Bay Area continued to be felt Thursday morning, with inclement weather playing a part in the overturning of a gas tanker on Highway 101 in San Jose.

Caltrans reported that hazmat crews were on the scene after the tanker spilled hundreds of gallons of gasoline on the highway near the Hellyer Avenue exit around 5:30 a.m., forcing the closure of southbound lanes.

The tanker collided with a truck that had slowed down due to weather conditions.

Traffic was redirected at the Yerba Buena Road exit. Caltrans estimated that the highway would be reopened by 5 p.m.
